Social butterflies notwithstanding, getting to know your neighbors in Nosara can be unnerving, particularly if you’re new to town. However, it doesn’t need to be a panic-attack inducing ordeal. It can be as simple as a wave, and (providing all the neighbors attend) as much fun as a banging late-night housewarming party.

In other towns, the responsibility for fire emergencies, food banks, education, environmental preservation, and many basic services lie squarely at the feet of the government. Nosara is not “most other towns.” Here, the lion’s share of these burdens are shouldered by volunteer organizations.

No matter how easy it is to get by knowing “just enough” Spanish, if you really want to engage with the real Nosara, you’d better get serious about learning the national language. For many expats who move to Nosara, the fact that so many locals speak English makes the idea of learning Spanish seem unnecessary.

One of the best ways to integrate yourself into the Nosara community, at least on a culinary level, is to approach it like a local. Luckily, Nosara is home to a multitude of talented local chefs and a great range of dining options.
